SmartMan© Information - Recoil

FULL CHEST RECOIL

DEFINITION

Allowing the chest to fully return to its normal at rest position.

EFFECT ON VICTIM

The volume of blood pumped in the next compression is reduced if the chest is not allowed to fully recoil. Continued failed recoils can stop blood flow.

HOW TO PERFORM

Take your weight completely off of the chest and allow it to return to its normal position. But do not lift your hands off the chest.

HOW IT IS MEASURED

SmartMan© measures the actual amount the chest is deflected. If the chest remains compressed more than 1/10th of an inch (2.5 mm) this is a failed recoil. At this level there is approximately 4-6 kg's of weight on remaining on the chest.

IN PRACTICE

Most people will produce a failed recoil once in a while. The number of failed recoils tends to increase with fatigue.
10% of people continually fail to release the chest.
